Description: The Canadian Geese that reside at Oakland’s Lake Merritt are a force to be reckoned with. Lake Merritt is the oldest wildlife refuge in the United States and the birds are protected as part of that status. Roughly 2,000 birds visit the lake for molting season wherein they shed their flight feathers and need a hospitable, protected habitat where they can reside while their feathers grow back. Most of the geese fly away for the winter, leaving about 200-400 permanent geese at the lake.
They are loud, unique, independent and fairly unapologetic about it all. These geese are proper Oaklanders.
